We last saw Emma Watson on our screens in 2022, during the Harry Potter 20th anniversary celebration. Her last big screen role was in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women in 2019. The actress who began her career as a child artist, playing Hermione Granger in the popular film franchise Harry Potter, slowly vanished from the film industry as she grew up. This led to questions about why the actress who wooed us with her charming presence in the wizarding world movies took a step back from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.
Watson is not only a talented actress but also a book lover and an activist. She often talked about taking a hiatus from acting and cited reasons like wanting to level up her knowledge and push her limits in activism to greater heights or when she once shared that she wanted to expand her filmography and explore direction and production. But did you know one time, Emma shared that she decided to step away from her mainstream acting career because she doesn’t want to feel caged? Scroll ahead to learn more.

In an interview with the Financial Times in 2023, Emma Watson opened up about why she stepped back from acting even after giving so many hits and critically acclaimed movies in her career. Emma revealed she wasn’t very happy with herself and added, “I think I felt a bit caged. The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn’t have very much control over.”
The actress further explained, “To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’ It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process.”
The Beauty and the Beast star then shared how she didn’t feel like herself while getting interviewed by the journalists, and started to feel like she was losing her voice. When Emma realized what she wanted, she took a step back from the glitz and glam world. The actress said, “I only wanted to stand in front of things where if someone was going to give me flak about it, I could say, in a way that didn’t make me hate myself, ‘Yes, I screwed up, it was my decision, I should have done better.’”

Now, even though Emma Watson doesn’t appear on the big screens often, she has finally gotten into directing. The Perks of Being a Wallflower actress directed, narrated, and starred in a short film to promote a fragrance from Prada in 2022. And now, she mostly works with her brother and has launched a wine-inspired gin company named Renais.
In this peaceful life, Emma is content and happy. She said, “I’m happy to sit and wait for the next right thing. I love what I do,” she explained. “It’s finding a way to do it where I don’t have to fracture myself into different faces and people. And I just don’t want to switch into robot mode anymore. Does that make sense?”
