Sydney Sweeney is back on the big screen, but her latest outing has not gone the way many expected. Eden, directed by Ron Howard, features her alongside Ana de Armas, Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, and Daniel Brühl, yet the movie has turned into one of the year’s most disappointing box office stories.

The film, which has a reported budget of $55 million, has made less than $2 million worldwide, struggling badly in both international and domestic markets.

Eden’s Box Office Struggles Highlight Limited Appeal

The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening in select European countries, followed by a limited US release a few weeks ago. Since then, it has managed only $1.5 million domestically, despite the star-studded cast. On its third Sunday in theaters, Eden earned less than $500 in total, with a per-theater average of $33. The weekend box office brought in barely over $2,000, and the film is now down to screenings at just 15 theaters across the country, per Box Office Mojo.

Eden Box Office Summary

  • North America – $1.5m
  • International – $825,00
  • Worldwide – $2.3m

Sydney Sweeney and Ana De Armas Face Consecutive Flops

For Sweeney, Eden marks another misstep after a series of box office setbacks. Following her romantic comedy breakthrough with Anyone But You ($220.3m), her projects have stumbled one after another. Americana was a bigger flop than Eden, and her supporting role in the superhero release Madame Web ($100.4m) placed her in yet another critical and commercial disappointment. She now looks ahead to Christy, a sports drama already generating Oscar buzz, and The Housemaid, a psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig, as potential comebacks.

De Armas has faced a similar struggle, with Eden marking her second failure in a row despite being one of Hollywood’s most bankable names.

For Howard, this adds to a track record of troubled releases that stretches back to Solo: A Star Wars Story, a $275 million production that became one of the franchise’s most infamous underperformers.

Eden tells the story of a group of Europeans escaping to the Galápagos in hopes of building a new colony away from war. Reviews have been mixed, with a 58% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The numbers, however, make clear that Eden is not resonating with audiences, leaving its star power and premise unable to draw crowds to theaters.
