There is a very common saying in Hindi, “Jawaani ka josh” or “umar hi aisi hai.” Between men and maturity, there is a clear boundary, and they stand at the other end with their fragile egos during a certain age; however, they come towards the sensible end as they age maturely. The same kind of ego clash happened between Shah Rukh Khan & Ajay Devgn when their careers were peaking!
And while there were always rumors of the two actors not getting along with each other in general despite Kajol being SRK’s friend and Ajay’s wife, they certainly came at loggerheads when their films Son of Sardar and Jab Tak Hai Jaan clashed at the box office.
The two films were released on the same date, November 13, 2012, which happened to be Diwali that year. However, Ajay Devgn, who was the producer of Son of Sardar, was not very keen on the clash and perhaps requested YRF to shift the dates. But the production giant did not buzz. But the clash got dirtier when Ajay realized that YRF used its dominant position in the market to get a higher number of screens, leaving Son of Sardar with a limited release. He cried foul and even filed a case against YRF, which was later dismissed.
However, Shah Rukh Khan was perhaps not very keen to enter this ugly battle, and in one of his interviews, he spoke to the media, and Masala quoted, “There is no fight between both of us. This is unnecessarily created by people. Both of us are actors. This is Ajay Devgn as a producer, fighting for his right with some other producer.”
However, Ajay Devgn was in no mood to let the matter go. In one of his press conferences, he roared out loud, “Personally, I have never had a fight with SRK. Kajol maintains her equations, and I maintain mine. Professionally, he reminded me, through others, that he was also the producer of Jab Tak Hai Jaan. So he was on the other side of the firing line. Hence, technically, my fight was also against him. He made no attempts to rectify the wrong they (Adi and he) did. That’s why there is no equation between SRK and me.”
This was before Kajol’s cousin Rani Mukerji was married to Aditya Chopra. The unthinkable happened next, and it was Kajol who had to face the brunt of the fight between her friends Aditya Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan, and her husband Ajay Devgn!
When Jab Tak Hai Jaan premiered, which happened to be Yash Chopra’s last film, Kajol was nowhere to be seen despite all YRF heroines being in attendance! Everyone was shocked at her absence since she was very close to Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra. Later, Ajay Devgn, in the media, confessed that Kajol had never made it to Jab Tak Hai Jaan’s premiere because she had never been invited!
However, as they say, with time, both the actors have aged gracefully and matured in a sensible way so as not to cause issues of such clashes. The superstar’s next film, Maidaan, is going to clash with Akshay Kumar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and he recently wished both films to do great!
Also, coincidentally, both Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardar performed well at the box office.
