Insidious, directed by James Wan, was a massive success that not only revived his standing in the horror genre but also gave birth to an entire timeline of sequels, prequels, and spin-offs that expanded the story, even though some viewers found it harder to follow as it grew.
According to ScreenRant, Insidious returns next month as HBO Max becomes the new home of James Wan’s 2010 horror classic. Viewers in India will be able to enjoy the 2010 horror hit on Jio Hotstar, just like any other content from HBO and Warner Bros.
Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne) settle into a new home with their three children. Their son Dalton falls in the attic and mysteriously slips into a coma the next day. As months pass with no improvement, eerie events begin, like alarms blaring without reason, strange figures appearing, and Dalton seeming to roam the house. After seeing terrifying spirits, the family moves, but the hauntings follow.

Soon, a psychic named Elise (Lin Shaye) reveals that Dalton is trapped in a dark spirit world called The Further due to his hidden ability to astral project. Josh, who once had the same power, must enter The Further to rescue his son.
Josh ventures through ghost-filled realms, finally reaching Dalton, who is being held by a demonic figure with a red face. As they try to escape, spirits invade the real world and attack the others. Josh confronts an old woman ghost from his childhood and overcomes his fear. Both father and son return safely, and the spirits vanish.
However, something is wrong as Elise senses a change in Josh. When she takes his picture, he strangles her. Renai later finds Elise dead and sees the photo, revealing that Josh has been possessed by the ghostly woman.
When it first hit theatres, Insidious surprised everyone by pulling in close to $100 million worldwide on a tiny $1 million budget (per Box Office Mojo).
Before this, Wan had already made waves with 2004’s Saw, a psychological thriller that went on to launch its own blood-soaked franchise. But after that high, the road was rocky. His 2007 efforts, Dead Silence and Death Sentence, both failed to impress or earn much.
That all changed with Insidious. It wasn’t just popular, it became a sensation. The unsettling imagery, gradually escalating tension, and unsettling atmosphere brought Wan back to life. To prove he was not a one hit wonder, Wan soon followed up with Insidious: Chapter 2, and then the cult horror classic, The Conjuring.
Now, as Insidious prepares to haunt HBO Max in July 2025, horror fans old and new get another chance to step into The Further.
