The much-awaited third installment of Avatar, Avatar: Fire And Ash, is all set to hit theaters tomorrow (December 19). Considering the brand value of James Cameron and the blockbuster success of the first two movies of the franchise, expectations are incredibly high for the upcoming biggie. Shockingly, as far as day 1 collection is concerned, it will be nowhere near the start Avatar: The Way of Water witnessed at the Indian box office. Keep reading for a detailed prediction report!
Over the years, the Avatar franchise has built a strong fan base in India. The first movie, released in 2009, offered a unique experience with the superlative technology involved in its creation. Back then, it managed to cross the 100 crore mark and emerged as a mega blockbuster in India.
Avatar: Fire And Ash lacks the pre-release hype seen with The Way Of Water
Twelve years later, in 2022, Avatar: The Way Of Water made a splash and raked in a massive 390.6 crore net at the Indian box office. It emerged as an all-time blockbuster. Of course, the good content and strong word of mouth were crucial to its success, but beyond that, it was the hype factor that worked tremendously in the movie’s favor. The 12-year gap did wonders and helped in building organic excitement.

Avatar: Fire And Ash is coming to the big screens tomorrow, maintaining a gap of just two years between it and the second part. So naturally, the buzz isn’t on the expected level. Other than the buzz, the film also suffers from the fatigue of the Avatar movies. Although the second movie performed brilliantly, it did face some criticism for its slow pacing and storyline. This criticism has been surrounding the third film, even before its release. Additionally, there’s no curiosity factor, as was present around the second installment. The same has been reflected in opening-day pre-sales, which are just over 100K tickets in the national cinema chains (PVR Inox and Cinepolis), whereas The Way Of Water had sold 330K tickets.
Dhurandhar’s strong run poses a serious challenge to Avatar 3
Apart from the factors mentioned above, Avatar: Fire And Ash faces a big threat from Dhurandhar. It’s understood that Avatar comes from a different genre and has a different set of audiences, but one thing is clear: Dhurandhar won’t let it secure an expected grand showcasing across the country. We’ll get a clear picture of the show count by night, but it’ll definitely be lower than expected. Other than the show count, the film’s buzz has been diluted to a certain extent by the wave of Dhurandhar.
Day 1 prediction of Avatar: Ash And Fire
Nevertheless, Avatar has its own dedicated fan base, which is excited to experience it on the big screen. Considering all the factors, it appears that Avatar: Fire And Ash will earn 18-22 crore net at the Indian box office on day 1. This is a big downgrade from the expected 30 crore+ start that we mentioned in some of our previous stories. Also, it’s shockingly less than Avatar: The Way Of Water’s 41 crores.
