HBO’s The Last of Us closed out Season 2 last month on May 25th with a major switch-up that reworked Ellie’s storyline. And now, fans are unsure how the next chapter will line up. Bella Ramsey stepped back in as Ellie, still turning in a solid performance.
However, this interpretation of her character didn’t exactly reflect the older, grittier one from the game’s follow-up. From tone shifts to plot shakeups, and how it might mess with what’s next.
Ellie’s Arc Now Looms Large on The Last of Us Season 3
In The Last of Us Part II, Ellie is sharper, fully locked on payback. But the show keeps her stuck in early-Ellie mode, not really taking charge. Instead of showing her slip into darkness, the series played it safe. Some fierce scenes were cut or toned down, making her arc feel more chill than charged.

The big moments, like when Ellie takes down Mel or finishes enemies with no mercy, were either skipped or reshaped. Her fights this time are more like quieter takedowns, or moments where someone else steps in. That edge of “I’ll do what it takes” never fully shows up. Her emotions hit at times, but her purpose wavers. The drive just wasn’t steady.
Dina and Jessie picked up the slack a lot. Ellie followed, reacted, or leaned on them to move forward. When Dina dropped the pregnancy news, Ellie cracked a joke instead of showing any fear, doubt, or weight. That emotional drop-off made some scenes feel light when they needed to land hard.

With Season 3 pivoting to Abby’s story, the balance could feel off. In the game, Ellie and Abby reflect each other — one drowning in revenge, the other finding peace. But if Ellie’s spiral doesn’t fully play out, that mirror might crack.
So far, HBO hasn’t spilled anything about how they’ll shape Season 3. But with Ellie’s arc feeling cut short, and Abby’s side coming next, it could be tricky to pull off that emotional payoff fans were hoping for.
