The bitterness faded eventually. Paramount, perhaps sensing the tides turning, opened its doors again for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Cruise, by then humbled by a string of misfires like Lions for Lambs and Valkyrie, came back ready to rebuild. Redstone later claimed credit for the reconciliation, saying Cruise had begged to return and no longer cared about money. The irony was rich as the same man who once called him a turn-off now hailed his comeback as a triumph of will. Cruise played the long game.
