The second teaser of Avengers: Doomsday has sparked many questions. In the recently released teaser, shown primarily during theater screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Thor is seen praying to Odin in a forest with tears in his eyes. This is a significantly different portrayal from how Thor typically appears in Avengers movies.

So why is he praying, and who is he trying to protect? Here is a simple breakdown.

Why Is Thor Praying To Odin?

Thor praying to Odin illustrates the seriousness of the situation. Odin has been gone for years, but Thor still turns to him in this dire moment. This means Thor feels helpless. In the previous installments, fans witnessed that whenever Thor feels helpless, he prays to his father Odin for strength in the upcoming fights.

Thor has lost almost his entire family. Loki, Frigga, Heimdall, Jane, and Odin are all gone. He has faced loss before, but this time the danger feels bigger. Praying shows that strength alone may not be enough.

This moment also hints at fate. Thor may believe the coming battle cannot be avoided. This time, Thor also asks for power to win the final battle, so that he can return to his daughter. Additionally, he wants to provide a better life for his daughter and does not want her to experience what he himself went through.

Who Is Thor Trying To Protect?

The scene suggests that Thor is trying to protect someone close to him before imminent war. The strongest possibility is Love, the child introduced at the end of Love and Thunder. Thor is now responsible for her. That makes this fight personal.

Another possibility is that the god of thunder wants to save the world from destruction. His tears strongly suggest that he is aware of the impending threat, which may be Dr. Doom.

The teaser is clearly repositioning Thor as a tragic warrior again, closer to his Infinity War version. It also hints that Avengers: Doomsday will lean heavily into sacrifice and irreversible consequences.

For now, these are all theories. We can only know what happens to Thor when Avengers: Doomsday hits the theaters on December 18, 2026.
