Over 60 notable films had released from January to June quarter in 2015 and while quite a lot under performed, there were few surprises as well. Compared to that, the July to September turned out quite an average 3rd quarter except one big film. Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan was the only film to become a huge Super-Hit in this quarter.
July started off exceptionally with Bajrangi Bhaijaan making massive collections as it made it to the 300 crore club. The film collected 320.34 crores at the domestic box office and also created a storm in the overseas circuits. Other than Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Karan Malhotra’s Brothers starring Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra was expected to be a big film. Surprisingly, the film fizzled out and made a average business of 82.47 crores.
Another surprising failure in this quarter was Kabir Khan’s Phantom. The film starring Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan was based on terrorism and had gathered quite a lot of buzz during its shoot. Phantom scored decently and became a plus affair at the box office but performed much lower than its expectations.
The latest release, Welcome Back proved to be a surprising success. The film made profits by recovering its cost as it has so far collected 98 crores at the box office. It outperformed its prequel which starred Akshay Kumar. Also Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam managed to surprise us with its performance. The film coming from the thriller genre, had a good run at the box office as it collected 76.16 crores.
Under-performer of the month (Sept) was Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty starrer Hero. The film was high on pre-release buzz, the jodi was much talked about and the music too was enough popular to bring in the audience to the theatres. But, the film didn’t perform to the mark. On the contrary, Kapil Sharma’s debut film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon performed surprisingly well at the Box Office. The film has roughly made an opening weekend business of 30 crores, which is close to/more than Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam!
Coming to the worst performers – July, August, September saw disasters like Bangistan, All Is Well and Guddu Rangeela, I Love NY, Kaun Kitney Paani Mein, Katti Batti, Meeruthiya Gangsters. However, some quality films like Masaan and Manjhi The Mountain Man too managed to entertain cinegoers!
The box office will soon have its happy days returning in the October to December phase as some biggies are lined up. Singh Is Bliing, Shaandaar, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Tamasha, Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani will be hitting the theaters in the coming months and well, we are expecting some record-breaking business from these.
