From Luck By Chance To Gully Boy – Rise Of A Film School Known As Zoya Akhtar!

Maverick filmmaker and screenwriter, Zoya Akhtar, is geared up with her upcoming Gully Boy. The movie depicts the struggle of an aspiring rapper, played by Ranveer Singh, of Mumbai. Though just three films old, the director has carved a niche in Bollywood with her style of story-telling and unconventional offerings.

After being part of the cults like Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya as an assistant director, Zoya Akhtar made her directorial debut a decade ago with Luck By Chance (2009).

The film was about a journey of an actor to become a movie star. Zoya’s crisply written debut exposed Bollywood with all its manipulations, double-standards, glamour, quirks, cliches, shallowness, superstitions, struggles, clannish mentality and ever-changing priorities acting as a way of life. Although a lot of movies have been made on the dark side of the industry, the refreshing and subtle treatment is something that makes Luck By Chance stand out. Unfortunately, it failed in number games as it just managed a lifetime collection of about 13 crores.

Just like Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai, Zoya’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) could be described as a timeless classic. ZNMD narrates the story of three friends, who set off to Spain for a bachelor trip. Through the course of their journey, the movie unfolds various philosophies of life. With a dash of sensible humour and some terrific poetic monologues by Farhan Akhtar, ZNMD celebrated the friendship like never before. The urban-drama made a decent business of 90 crores at the box office.

Talking about Zoya’s Dil Dhadakne Do, the movie was about the ‘rich people’ problems. Though it did have its share of flaws, it made a dysfunctional family plot an enjoyable watch. Dil Dhadakne Do also covered the bold issues like the plight of a woman stuck in an unhappy married life with a rich man. Without spoon feeding the sequences, the filmmaker delivered a different take on family issues. Just like all previous works, Dil Dhadakne Do too was mainly appreciated amongst the urban audience and made a decent lifetime collection of 76.88 crores.

Coming to this week release, Gully Boy, Zoya has come back to the place from where she started in Luck By Chance, i.e. Mumbai. But this time it’s not about the glamorous version but the underbelly of the city. Looking at the intriguing trailer and forthright dialogues, the movie gives the feel about its realistic touch. With an unorthodox style of story-telling, the filmmaker is once again set to woo the audiences with an assurance that Gully Boy will be more than just a struggle of a street rapper.
