The story is based on the murder of a 14-year-old schoolboy in a broad daylight. Chris Evans plays the role of lawyer Andy Barber who is also assigned to look into the case. However, things take a turn when his son Jacob (Jaeden Martell) is accused of the murder of his own classmate. So did Jacob kill the boy or did he not? What was the purpose? That’s what the show is about.

Even if the premise Defending Jacob looks quite simple, the crime drama has a lot to offer. The first episode starts with Chris Evans’ Andy being questioned by a lawyer about the murder incident that happened a year ago and how his son is accused of it. It’s a court trial going on and Andy keeps his answers short to defend his son in every possible way. The narration then takes us 10 months back when Andy, Laurie and Jacob’s lives change forever. The first three episodes titled Pilot, Everything’s Cool and Poker Face (approx 45-50 mins) are gripping. The writing is tight and hence, it comes on the screen as gripping and you are inquisitive to know who did it, why did they do it and how will Andy defend his son Jacob.

Along with the crisp and tight screenplay, it’s the performances that hook you. It was a delight to see Chris Evans not donning a superhero costume and fighting the aliens. He plays a common man who has a normal and happy family. He’s a smart lawyer, a loving husband and an adorable father. Michelle Dockery, who plays his wife Laurie is quite ambitious and a wonderful mother. Andy and Laurie’s son Jacob seems like an introvert but he’s fun around his parents. Until he gets accused of murder, Jacob comes across as a guy unbothered by the events around and the death of his classmate. But the fear on Jacob’s face will make you feel bad when he’s accused killing. Kudos to Jaeden for such an impressive act. After all, we’ve seen him giving his best even in the horror film, IT.
I watched all the 3 Episodes in one go as the story is interesting and engaging. I am curious to know to what extent a father, also a lawyer can go to protect his who accused murder. The new episodes will be out on May 1. So, I hope they are as gripping as the first 3 were.
Defending Jacob is a must-watch for those who enjoy crime and investigative dramas as so far, the makers have promised us a good series.
