Zendaya, the Emmy-winning star of Euphoria, has cemented herself as one of Hollywood’s brightest talents. But even she faced rejection for turning down roles that failed to meet her standards. In a candid 2021 GQ cover story, Zendaya shared that many scripts she received didn’t offer the depth she craved—and she wasn’t afraid to say no.

“It’s not necessarily that any of [the scripts] were bad,” she explained. “I just felt like a lot of the roles…were just like, I could have played them all as the same person.” Translation? One-dimensional female characters weren’t cutting it for her.

Zendaya rejected scripts where women served as mere props for male leads. “They’d usually serve the purpose of helping the male character get to where they need to go,” she said. No arc, no layers, no growth. That’s not Zendaya’s vibe. And honestly? She’s not wrong.
