Ali Hazelwood’s hit romance novel The Love Hypothesis is officially headed for the big screen, according to Deadline. Fans of the novel are about to see Olive Smith and Dr. Adam Carlsen leap off the page. Amazon MGM Studios, MRC, and Bisous Pictures are steering the ship, and the hype started the moment Lili Reinhart was confirmed to lead. Add Tom Bateman, Claire Scanlon, and a bestselling source material, and you’ve got an irresistible rom-com project.

The Love Hypothesis: Cast

The heart of The Love Hypothesis is now in the hands of Riverdale star Lili Reinhart, who’s not just fronting the cast but also wearing the producer’s hat. She broke the news herself on July 16, 2025, posting a bookstore TikTok and an Instagram snap with the book in hand. It was captioned with just enough emoji hints to send fans spiraling.

The very next day, Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile) was announced as Dr. Adam Carlsen. The casting raised eyebrows for a fun reason – Hazelwood’s original story began as a Star Wars fanfiction pairing Kylo Ren and Rey, played by Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley, who just happens to be Bateman’s wife.

The Love Hypothesis: Plot

While Amazon MGM Studios hasn’t dropped the official logline yet, the book makes the setup clear: Olive Smith, a biology PhD candidate, ends up in a “pretend” relationship with Dr. Adam Carlsen, a brilliant (and slightly intimidating) professor. The plan is to convince everyone it’s real for their own academic benefits. The problem is that the real chemistry crashes the experiment, throwing Olive’s careful logic into emotional chaos. Notably, Hazelwood’s original novel hit The New York Times bestseller list for 10 months and took home Amazon’s Best Romance of the Year in 2021.

The Love Hypothesis: Director

Guiding this love experiment is Claire Scanlon, whose rom-com resume includes Netflix’s Set It Up and The People We Hate at the Wedding. She’s also directed episodes of Abbott Elementary, Loot, and Palm Royale, making her no stranger to balancing heart and humor. The screenplay comes from Sarah Rothschild (The Sleepover), with Elizabeth Cantillon and Catherine Hagedorn producing alongside Hazelwood and Reinhart.

The Love Hypothesis: Is There A Release Date For The Movie Yet?

No, as of now, no official release date of the movie has been announced. Fans will have to wait to circle a date on their calendars, but early signs suggest the project is moving quickly into pre-production.
