It happened when his ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of physical violence. Since 2015, JD hasn’t had a pleasant experience in his love life. But that wasn’t the case always. The actor dated some amazing women in the past. One of them was Winona Ryder.
During the 90s, Johnny and Winona were the IT couple of Hollywood. The duo was madly in love with each other. The romance started in 1989 and went on for 4 years. The former couple even got engaged. But their love story ended on a heartbreaking note.

As reported by Mirror.Co.Uk, the Stranger Things actress had said, “When I met Johnny, I was pure virgin.” The actors had their first date at a friend’s house and it was marvellous. About the same, the Fantastic Beasts actor had said, “It was absolutely like nothing before. We hung out the whole day and night, and we’ve been hanging out ever since. I love her more than anything in the whole world.”
Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder were inseparable in the 90s. In an interview with People magazine at that time, the actor said, “There’s been nothing in my 27 years that’s comparable to the feeling I have with Winona.”
The couple got engaged after dating for 5 months. However, their love story didn’t have a happy ending. In the summer of 1993, Johnny and Winona broke up. The Little Women actress’ rep told People magazine that the reason for the split was their age. The rep said, “They’re young, and they grew apart.”
However, Johnny Depp blamed himself for the break-up. He told the Los Angeles Times, “It’s very hard to have a personal life in this town. My relationship with Winona, it was my mistake to be as open as we were, but I thought if we were honest it would destroy that curiosity monster. Instead, it fed it, gave people license to feel they were part of it.”
At that time, he was shooting Ed Wood with director Tim Burton. Tim reportedly said that Johnny would come to the sets with eyes full of tears. “I felt so bad. I asked him why it happened but all he said was, ‘It wasn’t her fault, it was mine,” shared Tim.
Tim Burton further said that after his break-up with Winona Ryder, Johnny Depp was never the same. Even when he was dating Kate Moss 12 months after the break-up, he wasn’t acting like himself anymore. He said, “It’s almost like Winona took Johnny’s soul, Johnny’s love.”
On the other hand, Winona Ryder slipped into depression post the break-up with Johnny Depp. She was taking prescribed sleeping pills as she was diagnosed with anticipatory nostalgia. It is a condition that causes an acute sadness when one leaves behind something important.
