Margot Robbie is one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood. Debuting in the industry with The Wolf of Wall Street and gaining critical acclaim for Barbie, Robbie has never said no to ambitious projects. In 2022, she acted in a movie called Babylon alongside Brad Pitt. Babylon is an epic by director Damien Chazelle, famous for La La Land and Whiplash.
The film promised an honest look at the world of 1920s Hollywood, showing the industry’s chaotic transition from silent films to talkies. Babylon boasted an all-star cast, including Diego Calva, Jean Smart, and Tobey Maguire, alongside Robbie and Brad Pitt. With Chazelle at the helm, the film seemed destined for massive success. However, it fell flat upon its release, and the actress is still confused about why.
Margot Robbie is hoping Babylon will get the Shawshank Redemption treatment from fans.
Babylon had a budget of $80 Million but grossed less than $65 Million upon its release. The movie also had an average approval rating of just 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 6.4/10. The movie’s failure remains a puzzle for Robbie, who recently talked about this experience during an episode of the Talking Pictures podcast.
Speaking with host Ben Mankiewicz, Robbie expressed confusion about the hostile reception. “I still can’t figure out why people hated it,” she said. Robbie hoped that Babylon might one day receive the recognition it deserves, likening its path to The Shawshank Redemption. This cult classic was hated upon its release.
“I know I am biased because I am very close to and believe in the project, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it. I wonder if, in 20 years, people will be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that Shawshank Redemption was a failure at the time, and you’re like like, ‘How is that possible?’” The polarizing reception aside, Robbie remains proud of her work on the film and with Chazelle.
