The Jack Black starrer metareboot, Anaconda, is experiencing a slow run at the box office amid the other trending releases, especially Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash. However, it earned a solid number on its first Monday at the domestic box office, which helped it recover its modest budget in less than a week. Keep scrolling for the numbers.

Anaconda at the worldwide box office

Unfortunately, the comedy reboot has dropped out of the top 3 in the domestic rankings and is earning significantly less, despite being a new release. The film has collected $2.6 million on its first Monday at the box office in North America, dropping by 32.9% from Sunday, despite being released on Christmas Day. It has recorded the biggest Monday of the year for a pure comedy, and with that, the domestic total has hit $26.1 million.

According to Box Office Mojo’s data, Anaconda’s overseas total stands at $20 million, which it collected during its opening weekend. Adding the domestic and the overseas collections, the worldwide total of the Jack Black-starrer is $46.1 million in five days. It will soon surpass the $50 million mark worldwide.

Worldwide collection breakdown

  • North America – $26.1 million
  • International – $20.0 million
  • Worldwide – $46.1 million

Recovers its budget & nears break-even point

According to the media reports, Anaconda was made on a budget of $45 million, and owing to its winning number on Monday in North America, the film has successfully recovered its budget. It can now focus on achieving its break-even target. According to industry standards, the film must earn 2.5 times its production cost to break even at the box office. Therefore, Anaconda’s break-even target is approximately $112.5 million.

Jack Black and Paul Rudd’s horror comedy film needs around $66 million more to break even at the box office. It is an achievable target, and the film is expected to get a boost this New Year’s weekend, pushing it closer to its goal. Directed by Tom Gormican, the film follows a group of childhood friends trying to remake the original 1997 film, only to be attacked by a giant and murderous anaconda. Anaconda was released on December 25.
