2013 had in store for Bollywood audiences a range of really unbelievable and unexpected incidents. As the year is drawing to a close Koimoi compiles for you a list of the year’s most unexpected events that have taken us all by surprise, sometimes pleasant and sometimes way more unpleasant than one could possibly imagine.

Hrithik Roshan and Suzanne Khan Roshan have been in fairy tale romance since nearly two decades. The couple who were on the verge of celebrating their 13th wedding anniversary decided to call it quits! Though there are no official reports as to why Suzanne decided to move out of a marriage that seemed picture perfect to all, it was heartbreaking for most to see their favorite Bollywood romantic fantasy coming to an abrupt end. This fairy tale turned out to be way starker than one would have dreamt of.
A 48 year old Superstar and his wife, who already had two beautiful children, son Aryan and daughter Suhana, decided to have a baby via surrogate mother. That’s not the shocking part as it is absolutely the couple’s call to have a new addition to their gorgeous family. Khan and his wife landed up in a sticky mess as a social activist filed a case against them for attempting to identify the sex of their unborn child before his birth. The case was dismissed by a lower court but has now been moved to the Bombay High Court. SRK on the other hand, has been extremely reclusive about his baby. Playing Daddy Perfect with his usual perfection, the last we heard of AbRam was when King Khan told the media that Baby Khan has his father’s trend of spreading joy and those iconic dimples!
Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan had carefully maintained distance following a nasty spat between them at actress Katrina Kaif’s birthday bash, half a decade ago. However, the two who were earlier extremely close friends decided to settle for being acquaintances this year. Not avoiding each other, the two shared the famous hug at a popular Iftar party as a gesture to mend their differences. Though Salman revealed that their friendship will never be the same, a little cordial-ness has never hurt a soul!
Jiah Khan was Ramu’s find for the film Nishabd where she debuted with Superstar Amitabh Bachchan. One morning we all woke up to find the ravishing damsel dead by committing suicide. Utterly shocking as it was, excavating the reason for her death was even more alarming as weirder truths came out of the closet. With buzz of her being depressed about her failing career which was on the brink of becoming non-existent, the final blow was faced by her boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi who allegedly was the culprit as he ended their relationship heartlessly. With everyone donning the judge’s chair on the issue, people just forgot to lament the loss of a young life which had the potential of becoming extraordinary.
Koffee With Karan’s Season 4 began with a tremendous start. Not just for the host Karan Johar who delved into an entirely unusual vein of film-making this year, but for the flair he showed in roping in the guests this time. The season’s pilot episode saw actor Salman Khan spilling out the secrets of his life – from his apparent ‘virginity’ to his tumultuous relationship with SRK and mostly about how India’s most eligible bachelor views his single life. However, a more enjoyable stint on the show was when KJo and Aamir shared the same screen space. Extremely different in their ways, Aamir frankly told Karan the reason he avoided his show for so long was because he didn’t like him much. The unexpected flavor this time was Bollywood’s two reclusive actors getting candid on a show which is so different from them. Salman has never gone candid on any show before this, and Aamir donning the couch on a candyfloss show was extremely unlike him. Perhaps everyone is trying their hand at something new this year.
Krrish 3 was deemed to be the biggest hit of the year. And its box office numbers perhaps the year’s biggest fiasco. The film’s producers apparently quoted higher earnings for the film than it achieved. Resulting in its lifetime numbers elevating to nearly 60 crores above the actuals, this was said to be the year’s biggest scam. Though Rakesh Roshan staunchly defended his film and team, a leading daily in protest stopped publishing their box office column altogether. The reality underneath could never come on surface, but this incident has resulted in making the box office fight a sham!
It came as a thud when a star kid and brother of a popular Congress MP was prosecuted under TADA rulings. Sanjay Dutt who was a co-accused in 1993 Bombay Blasts Case was finally executed by the Court. Bollywood’s Munna Bhai had begun life on a clean slate post his marriage and the delayed justice seeking attempt was not received kindly by most industry insiders. Quite ironical that misdeeds follow even when one’s penance is complete.
The debate continues whether the MMS was morphed or not but actress Mona Singh landed in troubled waters when one fine morning a nasty video went crazily viral over the internet. Though the actress was always received in the avatar of a righteous Indian Naari, this MMS tarnished her public image beyond recognition.
It was an event organized to pay tribute to legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra who unfortunately breathed his last in October, 2012. However, the show stealer was Shatrughan Sinha who made an unforgettable statement of referring to actress Rani Mukerji as Rani Chopra. Rani and Yash Raj Films’ honcho Aditya Chopra’s relationship has always shied away from media attention given Aditya’s impending divorce but Sinha’s blooper confirmed the brewing reports of Adi and Rani’s secret wedding!
Hrithik-Suzanne aren’t the only people seeking a respite from each other. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and Kalki Koechlin too decided to take a break this year giving a pause to their two year old marriage. With news of Anurag’s apparent link up with Huma Qureshi upsetting Kalki doing the rounds, the couple seem to be making an unusual attempt to reconcile their difference and iron out things for the better!
