M3GAN 2.0, the eagerly awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed sci-fi horror hit M3GAN (2022), is all set to hit the big screen on June 27, 2025, including Indian cinemas. The first film was well-received by critics and audiences alike, but is the sequel an upgrade (better rated) over the original? Let’s compare the Rotten Tomatoes scores of both films to find out.
While the original film earned a highly impressive 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, its upcoming sequel currently holds a much lower rating of 65%. As the time of writing, the sequel is trailing behind the original by a staggering margin of 28%. While the score could shift slightly as more reviews come in, a major change seems unlikely. It remains to be seen whether the audience will agree with critics. The verdict will be out very soon. That said, the trailer and premise hint at a sequel that could still deliver some solid entertainment.
Directed by Gerard Johnstone, the sci-fi horror film follows a brilliant robotics engineer, Gemma (played by Allison Williams), who creates an artificially intelligent doll named M3GAN (physically portrayed by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis). Gemma pairs the lifelike robot with her recently orphaned niece, Cady (played by Violet McGraw). But things go haywire when M3GAN goes rogue, becomes dangerously possessive of the child, and goes on a violent rampage.

Directed by Gerard Johnstone, the sequel ostensibly takes place two years after the first film. M3GAN’s underlying tech has been stolen by a defense contractor who intends to use it to create a military-grade weapon called Amelia. But after Amelia goes rogue, the only option left is to revive M3GAN and upgrade her to become a stronger and faster version of herself in order to protect the future of human existence.
Last year, it was reported (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the M3GAN universe was expanding, and a spin-off titled SOULM8TE was set for a theatrical release in January 2026. Directed by Kate Dolan, the film is described as an erotic sci-fi thriller. It follows a grieving man who acquires an AI android to help him cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. But things take a dark turn when the seemingly harmless robot transforms into something far more dangerous and deadly.
