Veteran Scottish actor and the Succession star Brian Cox has once again shown his support towards Harry Potter author JK Rowling over the ‘transphobia’ controversy. She allegedly said that a few positions taken by the trans community infringe upon the rights of biological women. Rowling’s said controversy dates back to 2020 and since then the celebrity author has been grilled by people for her opinions. Keep reading to know what Cox has to say about her now.
JK Rowling’s fantasy series Harry Potter took the world by storm and an era ended when the films came to an end. The leads of the franchise, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint sky-rocketed to fame with it. On the other hand, Cox’s Succession is a dark comedy with one of the highest ratings. Both the critics and the audience appreciated it.
Speaking to Sunday Times, Brian Cox defended JK Rowling as he said that the author is authorised to have opinions on her own body and womanhood. He further said that people are free to agree or disagree with her opinions but they “cant’ castigate” her. Since Rowling’s work dealt with children’s fantasy stories, Cox believes her views were directed at that. He said, “Whatever you think of her, she’s entitled to a view about her own body and womanhood because she’s a woman. You can disagree but can’t castigate her. Who are you?”
The context of the change of genders might confuse the kids. Brian Cox added, “Because I’m hearing about kids aged 12 or 13 who are questioning their gender. And that’s fine. There’s a reality to that, but also a fantasy. You can’t damn them. But you’ve got to understand the climate they live in. They want an answer, but there aren’t easy answers. And gross simplification makes things slightly barbaric.” He continued, “We need a conversation of compassion. For both elements.” Further defending JK Rowling he added, “A woman is entitled to views about her body and to feel critical of the transgender movement. She might not be right, but she is entitled and we forget that. We’re so ready to damn people. It’s a modern form of McCarthyism.”
Back in January as well, Cox spoke on JK Rowling’s controversy. While appearing on BBC’s Sunday earlier this year, Brian Cox shared similar remarks on JK Rowling. Back then he said, “I don’t like the way she’s been treated, actually. I think she’s entitled to her opinion; she’s entitled to say what she feels.” He added, “As a woman, she’s very much entitled to say what she feels about her own body, and there’s nobody better to say that, as a woman. So, I do feel that people have been a bit high and mighty about their own attitude towards J.K. Rowling, quite frankly.”
Even after a lot of criticism, JK Rowling did not back out from her views. She even went on to say that she received support from some of the Harry Potter fans as well.
