Not the story or differences, nope, the culprit was COVID. Emily Blunt and hubby John Krasinski had already wrapped filming and were all set for a March 2020 release. Then, bam—pandemic. The world shut down, and so did their movie debut.
March 12, 2020. The release was pushed back, and A Quiet Place Part II was left in limbo. Blunt? She dove straight into quarantine life. Instead of dodging creepy monsters, she was homeschooling her kids, getting lost in books, and popping up in quarantine projects—like Some Good News with Krasinski. Let’s not forget her cameo in Stanley Tucci’s iconic cocktail tutorials. Just your average pandemic life, right?
But here’s the kicker: The iconic actress wasn’t even sure she’d return to the A Quiet Place universe at one point. “I don’t believe that everything should be sequel-sized,” she admitted in an earlier interview. It wasn’t until Krasinski pitched a killer opening sequence while they were on vacation in Kauai that she changed her heart. “When he started pitching the idea, my eyes widened. It was just undeniable,” Blunt said.
And that was it. Sequel or not, Blunt was in. But there was one minor condition—Krasinski had to direct it. “If you don’t direct it, I’m not going to do it,” Blunt told him—power move. And, of course, Krasinski, who originally hadn’t planned on returning to the director’s chair, was all in. A Quiet Place Part II came to life with Krasinski writing the script in just two weeks—after months of plotting.
The delay may have felt surreal, but the timing worked out unexpectedly. The movie’s themes of isolation and survival hit even harder as the pandemic raged. Blunt reflected, “The idea of tiptoeing into the big bad world resonates more now than ever.”
While Krasinski handled the directing duties, Blunt stayed in the creative mix. “I’m now producing everything I’m in,” she said. The quarantine, in a way, gave her the time and space to carve out a path for herself. And with Jungle Cruise also dropping in 2021, Blunt was back on top, starring in two massively different films.
Blunt’s role in Jungle Cruise as the daring, reckless Dr. Lily Houghton had a special place in her heart. “I grew up completely obsessed with those types of movies,” she admitted, channeling her inner Indiana Jones. And working alongside Dwayne Johnson was an absolute blast. “Dwayne is a remarkable person,” she said. “Funny as hell but also a gentle soul.”
Looking back, Blunt’s journey through the pandemic was a crazy ride.
