Morena Baccarin has seen her share of chaotic moments on set, but none as haunting as the underwater scene she shot for Deadpool 2, which shockingly didn’t even end up in the movie. While chatting at Fan Expo Chicago, the actress revealed how she was tossed into a submerged apartment replica, 20 feet deep, to film a tense sequence that left her with more than just nerves. Despite battling discomfort and actual eye damage, the scene never made the final cut. Now, years later, she admits the memory still lingers.

Morena Baccarin Recalls Traumatic Underwater Scene Cut from Deadpool 2

Long before Deadpool & Wolverine brought Vanessa back into the spotlight, Morena Baccarin went through a physically grueling stunt that most viewers never saw. During the production of Deadpool 2, Baccarin stepped into what was supposed to be a dramatic underwater scene, a fully built apartment set, completely sunken below the surface.

“For the second Deadpool, I did this whole underwater sequence that just never made it into the film, and I still have nightmares about it. It was very traumatic. They put the apartment set underwater. So I was in a room much like this, 20 feet underwater. There was a roof over my head—it felt so wrong,” she told Collider.

Though it sounds like something ripped from a dream sequence, the reality was far more nerve-wracking. With divers on standby, Baccarin and co-star Ryan Reynolds were handed oxygen between takes. While Reynolds stayed cool under pressure, Baccarin admitted she was spiraling mentally.

“We performed the scene, with divers giving us oxygen, and [Ryan Reynolds] seemed so totally comfortable and totally fine, and I was freaking out the whole time,” she said. “We finally got through it, and we had eye damage from the bacteria and from particles of clothing and things that were in the water because we had to open our eyes the whole time, and it just never made it into the film.”

The bacteria-infested water and floating debris from wardrobe pieces didn’t help either. Both actors ended up dealing with irritated eyes due to being forced to keep them open during the shoot. Despite all that discomfort (and risk), the final version of Deadpool 2 didn’t include the sequence.

The stunt experience was so unsettling that Baccarin has since sworn off underwater work. Though Vanessa was initially written off early in Deadpool 2, Cable’s time-travel device brought her back in the post-credits scenes.

But behind the scenes, Baccarin’s ordeal became one of those Hollywood stories that prove not all heavy lifting gets the spotlight. Some scenes stay locked away in editing rooms, while their emotional toll follows actors long after the cameras stop rolling.
