After two Iron Man films and Thor, the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced us to Captain America: The First Avenger. Starring Chris Evans, the film also had Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, Hugo Weaving and Dominic Cooper. Chris played the titular role and the bad guy was Red Skull, played by Hugo.
In Captain America, we saw Chris Evans’ character’s powerful face-off with Red Skull. During World War 2, Red Skull was one of the leaders of Hydra. Both Steve Rogers and Red Skull took the super-soldier serum by Dr. Abraham Erskine. The super-soldier serum helped Steve to develop greater skills and physique, Red Skull, whose real name was Johann Schmidt ended up having a disfigured face and body. But that wasn’t how MCU had plans to show the villain’s story.
Marvel’s Concept Artist Ryan Meinerding shared how they initially planned Red Skull’s origin in Captain America. Hugo Weaving’s character was going to turn into the red monster with the help of tesseract. This concept art is truly outstanding. The way Johann transforms into Red Skull with the blue cube in his hands is seamless. While we enjoy his origin story shown in the film, this one looks interesting too. Take a look below to know the early idea for Hugo’s character.
