After becoming one of the most profitable films of 2017, Irrfan Khan starrer Hindi Medium is taking the China Box Office by storm, breaking one record after another.

The film is a satirical take on the state of the Indian education system and people’s bias against those that are not fluent in English. It tells the story of 2 parents who wish to get their daughter accepted into a top English medium school and their struggles along the way.The film was even declared tax-free in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, and received rave reviews from critics and the audience alike.

On Thursday, the film collected $1.09 million. So far, the Saket Choudhary directorial has earned a total of $26.20 million (170.91 crores), in its extended week at the China Box Office.

In fact, the Chinese authorities were so impressed with the content of Hindi Medium that rather than the main poster they opted for the teaser poster that had been designed by celebrated publicity designer, Rahul Nanda.

Producer Bhushan Kumar says, “There’s a unique twist in this tale. Hindi Medium is content driven and even though Irrfan is an internationally recognized talent, the Chinese distribution body opted for our teaser concept which shows the feet of a man, one representing poverty and the other representing material wealth.”

The poster clearly reflects the modern classicism in today’s society, where a person’s level of sophistication and elitism is directly proportional to their ability to speak fluent English.

Produced under the banner of Maddock Films and T-Series, producer Bhushan Kumar talked about the film’s success in China. “What I’m really happy about is that this success reinforces the T-Series and Maddock Films bond. We are striving to produce varied content and when a film with a big heart like Hindi Medium works across borders, it gives us immense satisfaction,” he said.
