In 10 days flat, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has now netted 69.60 crores at the box office. That’s an average of around 7 crores per day ever since its release. The film had opened quite well, did well during the weekend, sustained on the weekdays, and now has done good business all over again in the second weekend, with Sunday rising huge to 6.90 crores, which goes on to show that amongst the target audiences it has been picked up well.
It’s also good to see that of late, non-Marvel films have been doing good business as well at the Indian box office. Last year there were Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part and John Wick: Chapter 4, and this year Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has done quite well with Kung Fu Panda 4 also doing limited, but fair business. Of course, one still misses those Avengers films that have traditionally done that monumental 200 crores or 300 crores business. In fact their average offerings too end up entering 100 Crore Club.

Hence, while one waits for such kind of big money-spinners to returns, it’s nice that other franchises too have started finding footprints in India. That helps the overall business of Hollywood films to grow as well in this market segment. One common factor that remains though is that practically each of these is an action affair with more than 80% seeped into that superhero genre. Once Hollywood by itself breaks out of these self imposed shackles and starts making entertainers that are not VFX heavy/reliant, it would be good to see how the market grows.
