Yash Chopra may not have directed a film single film since 2004, but his name hasn’t faded one bit. The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) awarded him an honorary doctoral degree for his outstanding contribution to the field of cinema. From Dhool Ka Phool (1959) to Badmaash Company (2010) let’s take a look at how the thespian’s films have changed the face of cinema over six decades.
Yashji started out as an assistant to his brother, B.R.Chopra who was a prolific director-producer of his times (the Mahabharat television series). Yash Chopra began his career assisting his brother in Sadhna (1958).
In 1959, he made his debut as director with a family drama Dhool Ka Phool and went on to make the multi-starrer generational family drama Waqt in 1965 with Sunil Dutt, Sadhana, Raaj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore.
In 1973, Chopra turned producer for his Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore and Rakhi musical, Daag. After this, his and Amitabh Bachchan’s jodi proved to be an inimitable, delivering hits like Deewar (1975), Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Kaala Patthar (1979) and Silsila (1981).
Post Bachchan, it was Shah Rukh Khan’s turn for his place under the sun. Shah Rukh made it big as the psychotic killer in Yash Chopra’s thriller Darr (1993). Their collaboration, along with Yash’s son Aditya, gave us some memorable movies and unforgettable songs like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein and Veer Zaara.
Yash Chopra’s production house, Yash Raj Films has come a long way from the family-oriented dramas. Up next from it’s stable is the Neil Nitin Mukesh, Deepika Padukone starrer Lafangey Parindey set on the gritty streets of Mumbai.
