Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan are two of the biggest superstars in the country. They featured together in Darr alongside Juhi Chawla. The movie is a cult classic today and a significant turning point in their careers, especially SRK. Shah Rukh’s obsessive part is still engraved in viewer’s minds. But Sunny reportedly had a hard time with the movie and vowed not to work with Yash Chopra again.
It was directed by the legendary Yash Chopra only. The film was both a critical and commercial success. The movie also featured Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, and Tanvi Azmi in the supporting cast. There were reportedly several conflicts on the set about the logic behind how SRK’s character stabs him easily, whereas Sunny’s character was a trained and senior commando. Deol and Shah Rukh allegedly did not speak to each other for years.
Over the years, Shah Rukh Khan and Yash Chopra collaborated on several movies; his last film was also with the superstar Jab Tak Hai Jaan. He passed away in 2012 before the film’s release. Sunny Deol’s Gadar is one of the most notable films in the action star’s career, and in 2001, after the film’s success, while speaking to Filmfare, he called Darr a mistake and mentioned that if he ever started his again, then he would make a mistake like that film.
Sunny Deol was angry with Yash Chopra over the stabbing scene in which he ripped the jeans he was wearing. The actor recalled, “The making of the film was the worst experience of my life. I was sick of the manipulations and lies.”
Deol continued, “I’ll never work with Yash Chopra again. He isn’t a man of his word. I don’t have good memories about him, he betrayed my faith in him.” After the movie, Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny reportedly did not speak for 16 years, although the latter said it was a coincidence. He said that he doesn’t socialize much and cut himself off.
Cut to 2023, Sunny Deol threw a success party for his film Gadar 2. Shah Rukh Khan attended it, putting an end to all the feud. In an interview with India TV, Deol addressed the feud between him and SRK and said it was childish. However, in that interview, he revealed that SRK and he met several times and spoke to each other about movies and other things. Srk and his family watched the 2023 movie and lauded it as well.
On the work front, Sunny Deol has the period film Lahore 1947 in the pipeline. According to reports, Aamir Khan’s production will produce the film starring Preity Zinta opposite Deol. Sunny’s elder son Karan had tried out for a role in the movie and might be a part of it. It will directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Besides Sunny and Preity, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, and Shabana Azmi are also reported to appear in it.
