Famous director and filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi has been sentenced to 2 years in jail and a 2 crore fine after repeated warnings of paying bills to a financer. A ship magnate from Jamnagar, Gujarat, claimed that he invested 1 crore in one of the films by the filmmaker. Santoshi paid him ten cheques of 10 lakh each as payment.
However, the man Ashok Lal, in his complaint, said that all the cheques bounced. He tried connecting to the filmmaker, but all his efforts were in vain. He then filed a lawsuit under the Negotiable Instruments Act in 2017 as Rajkumar Santoshi was unavailable for any help.
Ashok Lal’s lawyer, Piyush Bhojani, in his statement, confirmed, “Subsequently, the accused applied to transfer the case filed against him to a Mumbai court, which was challenged by the complainant in the sessions court. The sessions court directed that all cases against Santoshi be heard in the Jamnagar.”
Now, according to a report by PTI, “A Gujarat court in Jamnagar on 17 February sentenced filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi to 2 years in jail in a cheque return case and directed him to pay ₹2 crore to the complainant.”
This is directly going to impact his current film, Lahore 1947 with Sunny Deol, which is being produced by Aamir Khan. Aamir has worked with Santoshi in Andaz Apna Apna, while Sunny had a great working relationship with him in films like Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak. In fact, he even directed Bobby Deol‘s debut film, Barsaat, at Sunny Deol’s insistence.
Sunny Deol last year made a remarkable comeback with his film Gadar 2, which was helmed by Anil Sharma. While the film collected 500 crore at the box office, it also proved a simple theory – Sunny Paaji’s recall value is of supreme order. And as soon as the audience made him a superstar yet again, the industry opened its arms and checkbooks to sign the actor for a project. One of these producers was Aamir Khan.
Lahore 1947 is based upon Asgar Wajahat’s play “Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya O Janmyai Nai.” However, now, after Rajkumar Santoshi’s arrest and 2 crore fine, the film might get pushed, or the cast and the producer, Aamir Khan, have to rescue Santoshi from this financial and legal crisis. The film has been speculated for a Republic Day 2025 release!
