The adorable makhan-chor is back in search of butter with his golden flute and peacock feather. Bollywood stars are equally excited about Krishna Janmashtami, sharing wishes on Twitter. With his film We Are Family releasing today (2nd September, 2010), Karan Johar is excited and hopeful, “‘We Are Family’ in theatres today…Happy Janmashtami to all…big love!” Ajay Devgan’s wishes are a lot more practical, “Happy Janmashtami…you guys going for dahi handi? I think it’s fascinating and lots of hard work.” Amitabh Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Vivek Oberoi, Shahid Kapoor and many other stars wished their fans on Twitter.
Bollywood has given us more than just stars to wish us on the occasion; we’ve got amazing songs to keep dancing through the rains on this Janmashtami. Let’s take a look at a few of them –
1. “Govinda Aala Re Aala”
Shammi Kapoor’s inexhaustible energy, Rafi’s unmatched voice and a crowd that’s as excited as can be; ‘Govinda Aala Re Aala’ has all the elements to make it a song that’s still drummed on Janmashtami. The song may be from the 1963 film Bluffmaster of the black-and-white era, but its magic lives on.
2. “Yahomati Maiyya Se Bole Nandlala”
Zeenath Aman and Shashi Kapoor made one steaming pair in the movie, but the songs of the 1978 film Satyam Shivam Sundaram stood out. Lata Mangeshkar and Mannay Dey’s melodious voices are set to Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s tune in this beautiful song.
3. “Mohe Panghat Pe”
Madhubala danced magnificently to Lata Mangeshkar’s voice and Naushad’s mesmerizing music. From the epic 1960 film Mughal-e-Azam, the song carries the innocence and playfulness of an unforgettable time.
4. “Chandi Ki Daal Par Sone Ka Mor”
From the little Krishna hiding from his mother, to the naughty gopi chaser, “Chandi Ki Daal Par Sone Ka Mor” is a more contemporary take on the swarthy hero from Vrindavan with Salman Khan in the song from Hello Brother.
5. “Aayo Re Sakhi”
Deepa Mehta’s Water was about the pathetic condition of widows in Vrindavan, but the songs and music of the film were so rich that he we had to pick “Aayo Re Sakhi” in our list. Sukhwinder Singh’s breathless vigour and Sadhana Sargam’s lilting voice were just the perfect tease for Krishna in this A. R. Rahman number.
