Basant Panchami or Vasant Panchami is celebrated to venerate the goddess Saraswati, the patron of knowledge and arts. Even Bollywood pays respect to the goddess hoping for a more fruitful year ahead.

Actor Vivek Oberoi tweeted, “Happy Vasant Panchami! Today we celebrate Goddess Saraswati, the goddess who blesses us with music, art and education. It is particularly an important day in terms of education when little children are taught their first words and schools organize special pujas. It’s considered to be an auspicious beginning to learning.”

As the festival also nears another celebration, Holi, people look forward to the festival of colours as well. The Holi parties of Amitabh Bachchan, the Kapoors, Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar are known to be the most fun-filled and popular.

Basant Panchami or Vasant Panchami is celebrated to venerate the goddess Saraswati, the patron of knowledge and arts. It is celebrated on the 5th day or Panchami of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Magha, which falls during January-February and indicates the commencement of the spring season. As it is also believed to be the day goddess Saraswati was born, Saraswati vandana and puja are conducted. Statues of the goddess are dressed in white and worshiped by devotees wearing white clothes. Vasant Panchami also announces the arrival of another springtime event in India – Holi, the festival of colors.
