Fans are buzzing with excitement as Suriya’s much-awaited film Retro is all set to hit the big screens on May 1. But did you know this romantic action entertainer wasn’t initially meant for the Jai Bhim star? In a surprising twist, director Karthik Subbaraj has revealed that the story was initially written for none other than Superstar Rajinikanth.
A Script Meant For Thalaivar
In a candid interview, Karthik Subbaraj addressed speculations that Retro was once intended for Thalapathy Vijay. The director revealed, “This story was not written for Thalapathy Vijay sir, as being speculated. I wrote this script keeping in mind Thalaivar. Initially, it was more in the action zone to suit Thalaivar’s image.”
The storyline was initially loaded with mass action elements to complement Rajinikanth’s larger-than-life screen presence. But when Subbaraj pitched the idea to Suriya, the project took a new shape. The Jigarthanda director added, “After narrating it to Suriya sir, it was changed to a love story. Even Suriya sir asked me if I narrated the script to Rajinikanth sir.” And this is how Retro transformed from a full-blown action to a romantic action entertainer.
