2013’s first quarter was filled with a bunch of multiple small budget, gem of films. While some unexpected ones struck gold at the box office, many biggies put up a rather underwhelming show. But now comes the year’s most crucial phase which will redefine box office history.
Last year, the stalwart was Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 which upped the existent box office benchmarks. This year with the superstars gearing up their releases strategically, it’s a time to take a look vis-a-vis last year’s festive releases and their respective earns.
While this year’s April remained steady with 2 States making 100 crores plus income, June had fabulous releases like Holiday which made 100 crores plus’ business and Ek Villain which joined the same ranks. There is no surprise in the statement that the 100 crore yardstick is soon changing and all the new releases in the second half of the year will redefine festive earnings in a monumental way.
Eid 2013 was the top notch performance amalgamation of Rohit Shetty and Shah Rukh Khan and 2014 will retain the luster of last year as Sajid Nadiadwala makes a directorial debut with Kick. Salman Khan might have had a dull year so far but Kick won’t go wrong it seems. The buzz is brilliant, it seems to have a right degree of masala and in all likelihood Kick will maintain the box office range of last year if not supersede it. Keep calm folks, coz this year Bhai is back on Eid.
Don’t know how it happened last year but Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara was not only one of the year’s worst films but one of the most disappointing films ever seen. Blame the prequel for its brilliance or the sequel for its bad scripting to bad acting. However, this year’s Independence day will be much brighter. It’s time for Ajay Devgn teaming up with Rohit Shetty and together they bring back on screen Bajirao Singham with style. Only the posters of Singham Returns are out and it is a gorgeous sight already! Hands down, on Independence day, it’s a score up for 2014 over 2013.
Is that even a question? 2014 wins over Ranbir Kapoor’s buffoonery anyday. Besharam was a terrible film and how two such talented people managed to make something that bad was beyond everyone’s head. But this year it’s too much happening on the same day. If you have seen Haider‘s trailer, then you know what will attract the niche audiences that day and for the masses it will be Hrithik Roshan – Katrina Kaif’s chemistry luring everyone in the Indian remake of Hollywood flick Knight and Day – Bang Bang. Won’t it be a brilliant day at the box office? Hell yeah. In every wholesome way possible.
With due respect, 2014 scores. It’s the King coming back to claim his Diwali date with the audience. SRK has been holding close to the Diwali mantle for a while now and sources have informed Koimoi that the grandeur of Happy New Year is way beyond anything Bollywood has seen before. It will be spectacular and massively brilliant at it. And though Krrish is still our superhero, 2014’s Diwali will take an easy win over 2013’s.
Ranveer Singh – Deepika Padukone’s smoking chemistry in Ramleela was the show stealer in 2013 and this year will just be as brilliant as post Diwali last year. Ranbir Kapoor will be back after a year long hiatus with Anurag Kashyap’s most ambitious and fascinating work till date. A period film, Bombay Velvet is all about a world never unraveled on celluloid. 50s’ Jazz singing Bombay anyone? This one will maintain the box office brilliance of last year Post Diwali.
Dhoom 3 versus Raju Hirani-Aamir Khan combo, for me the latter wins. Remember at a time when 200 crore was an unattainable degree, a crazy little delightful film called 3 Idiots from these mavericks came along to become game changers? They have done it before, they can do it again. Pushing the boundaries of commercial cinema beyond how we understand, Hirani and Aamir Khan have it in them to maintain Dhoom3‘s box office record. Now ousting in terms of memorable cinema, is what P.K will do!
