The first quarter of 2014 wasn’t exactly about super-successes. With Jai Ho performing below expectations and most other films passing off without leaving an emphatic mark, the second quarter of 2014 was way more promising from a box office perspective.
March 2014’s last Friday ended with lack luster releases like O Teri, Dishkiyaoon and Youngistaan. All three were, in most polite terms, box office duds. The films made a lifetime income of 3.75 crores, 6 crores and 6.75 crores respectively. March, with that, ended on a dismally dull note for Bollywood.
April, however, was a pleasant surprise emerging as a memorable month for the box office. Beginning with Varun Dhawan starrer Main Tera Hero, director David Dhawan used to the best of his abilities for his son, the remains of his midas touch from the 90s. The film that was made on an estimated budget of 40 crores emerged as a plus with a lifetime run of 55 crores at the domestic box office.
Bhoothnath Returns despite being received warmly by all could only scale up to be an average mark at the box office with a lifetime run of 39 crores.
2 States, however, was a fabulous success. Made on a budget of 35 crores the film went on to join the 100 crore ranks by settling for a lifetime income of 104 crores and emerging as a Super-hit.
April did not see a fairy tale ending. Though Kangana Ranaut’s simple girl portrayal in Queen was celebrated by all, her boisterous Revolver Rani was slashed with ease. The film settled for being a flop at a lifetime income of 10 crores. The other releases from the last week of the month did not achieve anything worthwhile either. Samrat & Co. flopped dismally with a lifetime income of 2 crores and Kaanchi made an income of 4 crores only.
It won’t be wrong to say that May was a month of Duds. With a string of 9 Flops and 2 Averages, May was a dull month except for Heropanti that lit up the box office.
Kya Dilli Kya Lahore and Purani Jeans kickstarted the month of May for Bollywood. The former made only 50 lacs at the box office and the latter struggled to rake in even 1 crores‘ business.
The second week of the month saw 5 releases, of which none were memorable at the box office. In terms of quality and income, Hawaa Hawaai scored over the rest coming off with an average number of 10 crores. The rest fell short by vast numbers. Mastram scored second, flopping with a dismal 3 crore lifetime number. Koyelanchal and Yeh Hai Bakrapur earned 2 crores each at the box office. Manjunath, however, fared the least by making a lifetime income of 1.75 crores at the domestic box office.
The following week in May saw the release of Himesh Reshammiya starrer Xpose. The film performed better than expected and emerged with a respectable income of 18 crores lifetime earning, being declared as an average fare at the box office.
The next week in May was terrific for box office when a small budget film with new stars did extremely well. Despite being trashed by all critics, Heropanti was declared a hit with a lifetime earn of 55 crores.
The final week of May saw the release of Hansal Mehta directorial Citylights starring Rajkummar Rao which made 8.24 crores at the domestic box office, achieving a plus status.
As the IPL season drew to a close, June emerged as a better month for the box office with nothing distracting in the vicinity to eat the business of films. While Holiday went on to become a superlative hit by joining the distinguished 100 crore club garnering a lifetime income of 111.25 crores, a delightful film like Filmistaan flopped with a measly income of 6 crores only.
Even in its second week, Akshay Kumar starrer ruled at the box office toppling an insignificant Fugly which went on to earn only 11 crores at the box office.
The third week of the month was again a pleasant surprise when Sajid Khan emerged out of the box office failure of Himmatwala with Humshakals. The film has so far made an earning of 61.05 crores. Though its numbers are dwindling with Ek Villain diverting all its audiences to itself, the film’s lifetime will settle in the range of 65 crores eventually.
And finally, the second quarter of the year ended with a terrific Ek Villain taking on the second highest opening this year. The film that almost challenged the opening day collections of the Salman Khan film Jai Ho opened to a magnanimous number of 16.72 crores on its first day. Emerging out as a winner by the conclusion of first weekend, the film in 3 days has already crossed the 50 crore mark. Crossing over its success into the next quarter, Ek Villain easily has the chances of being deemed as one of the most successful ventures this year.
The next quarter looks at big releases like Salman Khan’s Kick which wooed all with its fantastic trailer, Akshay Kumar’s It’s Entertainment and the hard hitting Mardaani, probably there is more box office successes in store in the next quarter of 2014.
