Vidhu Vinod Chopra is one of the most celebrated filmmakers who has given exceptional contributions to the film industry as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer. He has consistently delivered thought-provoking and emotionally charged films, but not many know that he was once offered a huge sum to kill off Jackie Shroff in a film.
Chopra, who often helms emotionally charged films, recently directed the upcoming film 12th Fail. While promoting the film, he opened up about the 1989 film Parinda, which was a game-changer for actors Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, and Anil Kapoor. Scroll down to know more.
During a recent interview, Vidhu Vinod Chopra disclosed that when it came to the ending of the movie Parinda, distributors expressed their reluctance to see Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit’s characters meet their demise. Instead, they suggested offering a substantial sum of Rs 10 lakh to have Jackie’s character killed off. Despite facing financial challenges, Chopra firmly turned down this proposal and has since elaborated on the reasoning behind his decision.
Talking to Galatta Plus, the filmmaker said, “When I made Parinda, I was very poor. The distributors saw the film, and they got me 10 lakh in cash. They said, ‘This is for you, sir. All you have to do is don’t kill Anil and Madhuri, kill Jackie Shroff.’ And they had pooled in two lakh from each territory, and they were raising the price of each territory. I said, ‘No.’ They said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Because if I kill Jackie and make them (Anil and Madhuri) live, then I am not saying what I want to say that ‘Violence begets violence.’”
Vidhu Vinod Chopra continued, “They didn’t get it. And I didn’t do it (make the change as requested by distributors). Parinda was an honest film maker.” In the movie ‘Parinda,’ the character portrayed by Nana Patekar, Anna, concludes the story by shooting and fatally injuring the characters played by Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor. This gripping film also featured Anupam Kher in a significant role.
Parinda garnered numerous accolades in the Indian film industry and was India’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 1990 Oscars. Unfortunately, it did not secure a nomination. Fast forward to 2015, Vidhu Vinod Chopra took on the challenge of remaking ‘Parinda,’ transforming it into a Hollywood production titled ‘Broken Horses.’
