From a goon in Footpath (2003) to a gangster in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Emraan Hashmi’s Bollywood journey has come in a full circle. In an interview with Komal Nahta on ETC’s Bollywood Business, the 31-year-old actor talks about his character in the film, his serial-kisser tag and his dream of making movies for his infant son.
What was in your role in ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’ that made you accept it?
I’ve been offered underworld roles before but I always felt they were the stereotypically dark and gritty. I wanted to make a benchmark with mine. Physically, my look was completely different, that’s why I wanted to do it; otherwise there was no point. The entire tone of OUATIM is serious and intense, but not dark. Pritam’s music is wonderful; it’s a great blend of 2010 and the 60’s.
“People won’t come to a theatre to see me kiss someone else.”
You still carry the tag of being a serial-kisser. Does that ever bother you?
It’s a bit amusing but I didn’t know it would catch on so fast! Five years ago I wore a T-shirt in a film with the tag ‘Serial Kisser’ and it’s stuck ever since. Eventually, I know that people won’t come to a theatre to see me kiss someone else. I learnt a lesson when a few of my films with kisses and intimate scenes worked and some didn’t.
Do you think Mahesh Bhatt was responsible for that image of yours?
Mahesh Sir has always been known to bring a turning point in his films, and that applies even to Anurag Basu. But it was important in the script of the films I did and so I didn’t have any qualms (doing those scenes).

Do you plan to cut down on the kissing after marriage?
(Laughs) I don’t make movies to watch them at home on DVDs with my family. Unfortunately or fortunately, I indulge in unethical things on screen. I would want to do a film for my son, but very few of my films are without the U/A Certificate.
