Kamal Haasan has been an inspiration for film fraternity across the world. From the ‘Kill Bill’ director Quentin Terentino to ‘desi’ director like Gautham Menon, all have admired and been inspired form this versatile actor/director/producer. He is back with his latest offering Vishwaroop which has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Audience always expects something extraordinary from his movies since they are script and character dependent with music weaving them both together. Music of his latest spy thriller is no different. To give a slick effect in the compositions, he has chosen Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to help him create the right atmosphere. It’s a short album with four original tracks with lyrics penned by veteran Javed Akhtar.
Vishwaroop Title Song – Vishwaroop Music Review
Album opens with the title track Vishwaroop which is delivered by Suraj Jagan. It does well bring to fore an element of thrill while also introducing the protagonist. Music is as per the requirement and does make the listener inquisitive about the character. However in the process of taking a Hollywood approach and style, melody takes a back seat here. Having said that, it has something unusual for the audience to enjoy. The ‘remix version’ has an electronic sound fused with rock which should would great as a part of the background music.
Jung Hai – Vishwaroop Music Review
Similar momentum continues in the next track titled Jung Hai. Rendered by Benny Dayal and Shankar himself, this track describes the theme of the movie. Needless to say, Javed Ahtar’s lyrics are to the point and easy to understand. This one should do well in catching listener’s attention.
Main Radha Tu Shaam – Vishwaroop Music Review
Since Kamal Haasan’s character in the movie is that of a Kathak teacher, it is expected that there would be a classical track to support that. Main Radha Tu Shaam fulfils the requirement and the interesting part is that Haasan himself has given his voice, hence bringing on another shade of versatility in his character. Shankar dominates latter part of the track in his full classical form with some lovely rendition. However, due to it being a situation based track, there might not be many takers.
Koi Kahin – Vishwaroop Music Review
Nikhil D’Souza makes an entry in the album through Koi Kahin. It’s a slow and sad song, which tries to express the complexities of the situations in the movie. Kamal Haasan also lends his voice in this track which is a mix of English and Hindi lyrics that blend beautifully with the music. Soft rock genre of the composition works well with this song which has lyrics that are deep and expose the cruelty of terrorism and aftermath clearly.
The Last Word – Vishwaroop Music Review
Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s music has always been unusual but as per the script and still liked by listeners. That is because even in their unusualness, there is always an element of melody and fun. However in ‘Vishwaroop’ it is as per the script due to which one hunts for the aforementioned elements. Though one can argue that there is very little space for music in spy thrillers, hopefully the script and acting of Kamal Haasan would carry the controversial movie well on their shoulders.
