Celebrity Chef Kunal Kapur, who is a regular guest on the cooking reality show Master Chef and also judged it for two seasons, has been granted divorce after being denied one in the lower court. Kunal appealed for divorce in a family court, which did not pass the judgment in his favor, and he challenged the court’s decision in the Delhi High Court.
In his plea, Kunal mentioned that his wife has been humiliating him in public and regularly disrespecting his parents. The judgment was passed after the hearing of both parties.
The divorce was granted to Kunal Kapur on the grounds of cruelty and humiliation. The bench, in their judgment, said, “We find that the conduct of the respondent (wife) towards the appellant (husband) has been such that it is devoid of dignity and empathy towards him. When such is the nature of one spouse towards the other, it brings disgrace to the very essence of marriage, and there exists no possible reason as to why he should be compelled to live while enduring the agony of living together.”
However, the celebrity chef’s wife made wild allegations against him that included infidelity and instigating her to commit suicide. The judgment further read, “The respondent (wife), in her written submission, has made allegations of infidelity and extra-marital relations of the appellant (Kapur) after his coming to the limelight. She has averred that once the appellant started getting public attention, he regularly engaged in flirtatious texts with his fans in addition to making unnatural s*xual demands from her.”
The court maintained that no proof was submitted by the wife to support her claims, which clearly meant she was insinuating. The wife said that she had always been loyal and loving towards her spouse, but his behavior changed after he became a celebrity.
High Court Favors The Chef
The court, however, said that Kunal Kapur turned into a celebrity chef within two years of marriage, which reflects his sincerity and hard work. The judgment read, “Baseless arguments, when made about a person who is regularly in the public eye, have long-lasting effects on his reputation, and tarnishes his image among his peers. Therefore, such an act amounts to cruelty.”
The wife, in response, said that Kunal Kapur has been disloyal as a husband and dishonest as a father. Her side alleged, “In collusion with his parents, he (Kunal) has enacted sordid drama to get rid of daughter-in-law by either forcing her to commit suicide or by taking divorce.”
Kunal Kapur began his career around 2000 with the Taj Group of Hotels and is currently the Executive Sous Chef at the Leela Kempinski in Gurgaon. In 2008, he was rated “The Best Indian Chef” in New Delhi by India Today, and he was titled “The Next Big Guy in Kebabs and Curries in India.” He has hosted and judged seasons 1, 2, 3, and 5 of the cooking reality show Master Chef India.
