Mufasa: The Lion King’s weekend actuals came in higher, and with that, the movie regained its crown at the domestic box office. Despite a slower start, the movie has a powerful hold at the box office and is leading the race against Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the worldwide box office. Scroll below for the deets.
Before the actuals were reported, Mufasa was at #2 behind Keke Palmer and SZA’s One of Them Days. The difference was very minute, and the Disney feature got lucky. It is nearing the $600 million mark at the worldwide box office and recently surpassed Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as the seventh biggest film of the past year. It is still far behind The Lion King’s extraordinary global haul and might not be able to recreate that success, but it is also a box office success.
According to Luiz Fernando’s report, Mufasa: The Lion King collected a solid $11.7 million on its 5th three-day weekend, with just a drop of -17.7% from last weekend. However, it lost 65 theatres on Friday and is facing several competitions. Mufasa reached a $209.79 million cume in the United States, becoming the 10th 2024 release to cross that mark at the US box office. It will soon pass the domestic haul of Timothee Chalamet starrer Wonka, and the movie collected $218.4 million in the US.
