It is not just now that Bollywood has an item number to boast of in its products. Item songs were always there, though it got termed an “item” only after the birth of modern media. When did that happen? Well, that is an arguable topic and we’ll leave such controversies for some later discussions.
Remember the Geeta Dutt number “Babuji Dheere Chalna”? Remember “Mehbooba Mehbooba” from Sholay? Yes. It is an age old tradition. But of late the whole item song infatuation has apparently hit an all new level of frenzy. Every movie, no matter what it has with regards to cast and crew, has an item song lined up. Some say it is the larger number of perverts in the viewers that the seller is trying to appeal to. Some believe dance numbers are more in the loop and there are more and more clubs opening up all the time. Some also feel it is to make the movie sell even with its absence of a story, whatsoever. But these are just few theories and people are still speculating. Here are the top 9 item songs of 2012:
Kareena Kapoor rocked her own boundaries and presented this item number. And fans can’t wait for September 21st when finally the Madhur Bhandarkar movie Heroine releases. Kareena Kapoor has totally put her Chammak Challo experience from Ra.One and Dil Mera Muft Ka experience too, to good use. This film has music by the duo, Salim and Sulaiman.
Let us not dwell into the censored or uncensored discussions about the lyrics of the song. Just think of Chitrangada Singh and yes, now that is a definite come back. The song featured John Abraham and partly and Indian wedding back ground. This April 20 release had music by Abhishek and Akshay, Bann, Rochak Kohli and Ayushmann Khurrana.
If any song could give Chikni Chameli a run for its money, it has to be this one. Sorry to sound immensely biased but yes, no one combines grace and sensuousness the way Malaika Arora Khan does. The April 5 release, Housefull 2 did manage to create some serious ripples with this item number also starring the protagonists of the movie like Akshay Kumar, Ritesh Deshmukh, John Abraham, Boman Irani, Mithun Chakraborty, etc. The vocals were by Mamta Sharma and Sukhwinder Singh.
Dil Mera Muft Ka song has vocals by Nandini Srikar, Muazzam, Rizwan, Shadab Faridi, Altamush Faridi and Shabab Sabri. And we have always liked Bebo better when she is not size zero. Kareena Kapoor sizzled on screen in her gharana style and the number gained immense popularity. The movie boasting of this track is Agent Vinod, starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor and many more. It had music by Pritam and was a March 23 release.
Jodi Breakers was a critical disaster as far as the box office is concerned. But the song Bipasha seemed to have gained some ground with the sultry Bipasha Basu dancing to her name. This February 24 release had music by Salim and Sulaiman and the song was sung by Shraddha Pandit and Shadab Faridi.

Agneepath was the most awaited remake of the year getting a Republic Day release on the 26th of January. Katrina Kaif’s performance as the Chikni Chameli is till date the year’s most successful item number, probably tie-ing only at number one with Mallaika’s Anarkali Disco Chali. It had vocals by Shreya Ghoshal and music by Ajay and Atul. With ‘Shiela’ and ‘Chameli’ she proved she can add the required fizz to item numbers.
