The low pick up of Yash Raj Films’ recent release Aurangzeb despite a stand out performance from the film’s lead actor Arjun Kapoor is shocking. The actor, who was framed by critics as Bollywood’s next big thing after Ishaqzaade in 2012, had a rather dull second film to his credit. While his fiery chemistry with Parineeti Chopra ruled after the film, Aurangzebis expected to wither away without gaining much notice.
However, Arjun isn’t perhaps the only Bollywood actor who has suffered the bane of a doomed second film. It was in 2012, that one of India’s most loved VJ Ayushmann Khurrana decided to venture into Bollywood as an actor with Shoojit Sircar’s unusual comedy film Vicky Donor. Dealing with the topic of sperm donation, the film was a hilarious feat.
Earning Khurrana awards at every prominent Bollywood Awards Night, 2012 was the year this man owned. But his second film Nautanki Saala along with Kunal Roy Kapur failed to leave a desirable impact on the audience. While the first film had his audiences laughing with his impeccable sense of comic timing, the his second film couldn’t match up to the hype he had built for himself. In fact,Nautanki Saala managed to rake up a plus amount at the domestic box office.

This star kid had one of the most spectacular beginnings of his career. In 2000 as Filmkraft launched him in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai along with debutant actress Ameesha Patel, the film was highest grosser of the year in terms of both revenue and awards. His next venture Fiza with Karisma Kapoor was directed at a very slim section of the audiences. Despite most riveting performances from its actors, the film was a dismal flop and earned a bare amount of 12.25 crore. For many years that followed, Hrithik went through a dry phase till Koi Mil Gaya happened to him and he hasn’t tasted his bad days ever since!
Launched by his Mamu, perfectionist Aamir Khan in 2008 film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, he was greeted in Bollywood with terrific success. His small film went on to become one of the year’s most notable ventures. Following that he too was struck by a massive success drought. His next film Kidnap, though began strongly at the box office, wasn’t received very well by the audiences. It took Khan a while to emerge out of low phase. But the enthralling success of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na could not get recreated till Delhi Belly.
After serving as an assistant director on noteworthy films Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Dil Toh Pagal Hai, he made his debut in the SRK starrer Mohabbatein in 2000. Critics gave the young blue blooded Chopra a thumbs up and audiences expected wonders from his going by his legacy. His next film Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai was raked up an average amount. Made on a humble budget, the film only managed to earn 5.75 crores at the domestic box office beginning a plague period in acting for him.
While a second low is not always deterring rather it eases out any bloated over confidence the actor may have acquired, it is popularly believed that most stars who have a low second release after a booming first have tasted greater success in the tinsel town, but exceptions always exist. Bambai nagariya mein sab kuch kismet a khel hai jee!
