It is the much coveted awards season in India and with Filmfares, Screens and IIFAs being handed out all over the place, Koimoi takes you back to one of Indian commercial cinema’s most significant tryst with what is considered the most honorable award for the film fraternity – The Oscars.
It was in 2001, that Aamir Khan’s film Lagaan found a place amidst the top 5 nominations in the Foreign Film Category at the Academy Awards that year. It was definitely not the first time an Indian film had found a place there, but all who grew up in that generation, it was a memorable moment.

When Lagaan missed out on the Oscar race, it was more than merely upsetting for the team. But filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar and actor Aamir Khan held their spirits high and did not take the loss badly. The film is still considered amongst the 100 best films in world cinema. In this trivia video, we take you through the reactions of Lagaan‘s team on losing the Oscar. Sporting we must say!
