The K-pop industry has been running like a well-oiled machine, with companies pushing out new groups yearly. Aspirants undergo rigorous training to achieve their dream of debuting in the K-pop music industry. When they finally get the chance to debut, it is time for them to work towards keeping the group and their identity afloat in the industry.
When any K-pop group makes a debut, the companies create enough hype and anticipation with teasers so that the fans can get what they want. Being in the spotlight means the person has to have a presence that is up to people’s liking. When it comes to K-pop idols, this image becomes much more stricter.
The image of K-pop idols is often painted to be the “one true person” for their fans. They are shown to be someone who does not date, do not indulge in untoward behavior, are sweet, conform to orthodox societal norms, and have a love for their fans and fans only. The fans lap this fantasy up. However, fans often forget that K-pop idols are individuals with their own desires and struggles. The public image they project is merely a marketing strategy aimed at attracting more fans.

K-pop idols begin their training early and are disconnected from a lifestyle that most others in their age group experience. A teenager would want to experience going on a first date and hanging out with friends. A young adult on the cusp of graduation would wish to embrace the new start with a new experience.

A recent controversy involving RIIZE, a K-pop boy group from SM Entertainment, centers on former member Seunghan, who took a hiatus following allegations of dating and substance use as a minor. His return was met with significant backlash from fans, including the sending of funeral wreaths to the company. This backlash deeply affected Seunghan, leading him to withdraw from the group to prevent further harm. However, international fans have shown overwhelming love and support for him.
Despite its modern outlook, Korean society still has outdated and orthodox views on how an individual must behave. While this article is not a commentary on the rights and wrongs in the moral conduct of any society, it is also necessary to look into the right and wrong of any action taken. Hypocrisy thrives when there is no one to challenge it. A timely call-out can stave off any negative experiences for an individual or society.
Of course, it is not wise for anyone to indulge in substances and resort to illegal activities. One must be reprimanded adequately. What Seunghan did was an act of his rebellious teenage urge. But it does not justify his actions. He should have been careful about his approach and his image. But wishing death upon him for such a small matter is in no way justified. There is another active case in SM Entertainment where another group member is being investigated for a heinous crime.
Something similar later happened with Suga of BTS. He faced DUI charges for operating his electric scooter after consuming alcohol. Even though his blood alcohol level was under the legal limit, he faced fines and reprimands for the incident, highlighting the importance of refraining from any impaired driving. Granted, we understand that reasoning.
Some of the most recent events have come into the limelight. In the past, there have been events where K-pop idols have also had to issue apologies for dating and marrying. Several K-pop idols have had to leave the group and the spotlight after marriage because they were no longer ‘fantasy-worthy.’ If you truly love an artist, you love them for their art and ideas.
While the love between the idols and the fans is beyond words, the fans also need to see the reality that the person they like lives in a world of their own. While an artist can provide comfort and a sense of connection through their work, believing that they are your one true love or future spouse is a misguided fantasy. It’s essential to recognize the difference between admiration for their art and unrealistic expectations about personal relationships.
