We are just two months away from the theatrical release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The film is a spin-off of 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road and focuses on Imperator Furiosa’s character. In the 2015 film, Charlize Theron played the fierce lady and in the spin-off, Anya Taylor-Joy is playing the titular role. George Miller directed both the action movies.
The reactions were mixed when Furiosa was announced with Anya Taylor-Joy in the leading role. While many shared their eagerness to watch Anya in a full-blown action film, some wondered why the makers didn’t cast Charlize Theron to play the leading role. After all, Theron left a significant impact with her powerful performance in Mad Max: Fury Road.
In an interview with Empire, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga director shared the reason for casting Anya instead of Charlize. George Miller said, “It definitely would have been Charlize had Furiosa been made before Fury Road. As time went on, I began thinking, ‘Oh, maybe we could do de-aging.’ Then I watched really masterful filmmakers like Ang Lee and Martin Scorsese, doing Gemini Man and The Irishman, and I saw that it hadn’t been licked. All you’d be watching is, ‘Look how well the technology works?’ It would not have been persuasive.”
The director added that it was an intuitive response. Miller stated, “There’s an innately resolute quality in Taylor-Joy. She’s a very determined and rigorous person. She has a mystique about her. And she’d been trained young as a ballet dancer. Charlize trained young as a ballet dancer. There’s a precision to them that was needed.”

Along with Anya Taylor-Joy, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga also stars Chris Hemsworth, Quaden Bayles, Nicholas Hoult, Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, and Daniel Webber. The action-adventure film will release in US theatres on May 24, 2024. On the other hand, Mad Max: Fury Road stars Charlize, Tom Hardy, Nicholas, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Josh Helman, Nathan, Zoe Kravitz and Riley Keough.
