It was pretty much expected that The Shaukeens would take a decent start at the box office with collections in the range of 40%-50%. However, surprisingly the start was on a lower side with the first day a couple of crore less than what was on the cards. Still, what worked in the film’s favor was the positive word of mouth from those who saw it in theaters. As a result of that, the film found decent growth over the rest of the weekend, hence resulting in 18-19 crores coming in.
The film has two things going in its favor – Lack of competition and the cost. The only other Hindi film which has found some collections is Happy New Year and that too is much lower compared to The Shaukeens, considering the fact that it is in its third week. This means The Shaukeens has the stage set to find a stable week for itself. Secondly, the film has been made on a controlled budget and hence it should eventually sail through. What has been appreciated unanimously is Akshay Kumar’s act in the film and that is expected to pull more audience.
Rang Rasiya was the second release of the week and it met with a very poor response in majority of centers. With around 2.5 crore coming in, the film has found itself on a wrong foot from the very beginning. Though a few select up-market theaters have shown some patronage, it won’t make much of a difference to the eventual fortunes of this Ketan Mehta’s Randeep Hooda-Nandana Sen starrer. A well made film, it deserved better.
Chaar Sahibzade has thrown a pleasant surprise by finding audience in the Punjab circuit, where it had its target audience. Filmmaker Harry Baweja has tasted success after a while with his animation flick that has managed to collect over 1.25 crore in its first weekend. Since the film has released worldwide and comes with a promise of good shelf life, the word of mouth could well help it sustain and later earn more moolah in its much wider release globally over a period of time.
