Kollywood industry had a good last year, with two films emerging blockbusters and crossing the 600 crore mark at the worldwide box office. Yes, we’re talking about Rajinikanth’s Jailer and Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo! Both films made their way into the top 3 highest-grossers in the Tamil film industry. So, today, we’ll be making a fun comparison between these two films.
Jailer’s glorious run at the worldwide box office
Directed by Nelson, Jailer was a much-needed success for Rajinikanth as he was going through a string of underperformers. Upon its release, the film was well-received by critics. Needless to say, it enjoyed superb word-of-mouth among audiences.
It did a business of 345 crores net at the Indian box office, which equals 407.1 crores gross. In the overseas market, this film earned 197.9 crores gross, thus pushing the tally up to 605 crores gross at the worldwide box office.

Leo’s blockbuster global run
The film marked the reunion of Thalapathy Vijay and director Lokesh Kanagaraj after Master. Upon its release, this action thriller enjoyed mixed reviews from critics, but it still found acceptance among audiences.
At the Indian box office, Leo did a business of 342 crores net, which equals 403.56 crores gross. Internationally, the film did a rocking business of 204.1 crores gross. The overall run ended at a staggering 607.66 crores gross, thus making it Thalapathy Vijay’s highest-grossing film.
Budget of Leo & Jailer
There have been several reports about the cost of the Thalapathy Vijay starrer, but if trade buzz is to be believed, it carried a budget of 285 crores. It included Vijay’s salary and the cost of marketing.
Talking about Jailer, the film carried a budget of 200 crores if the trade buzz is to be believed. This included Rajinikanth’s upfront salary and marketing expenses. For those who don’t know, the superstar also took a chunk of profit from the box office collection.
Ratings of both Kollywood biggies
On IMDb, Vijay’s film stands at a rating of 7.2 out of 10, with a vote share of 57,000 users. On Rotten Tomatoes, Leo enjoys a score of 80% on Tomatometer. It has a rating of 72% in the audience score.
Jailer enjoys a rating of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb, with a vote share of 33,000 users. On Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, it carries a 50% rating. In the audience score, it is rated at 89%.
