Sony’s Spider-Man Universe At Worldwide Box Office: From Venom To Madame Web! ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

With Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web out in the theatres, another movie has been added to Sony’s Spider-Man universe. We have seen other films in that universe, including Tom Hardy-led Venom. However, the films comparatively earn less at the box office than the MCU movies, but remind you, we are not talking about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films.

The Spider-Man movies have been under Sony for a long time until Tom Holland played the role; it merged with the MCU, and thanks to that, the fans witnessed Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom’s versions of Peter Parker in 2021’s No Way Home. In the end credits, we saw Tom Hardy’s characters, Eddie Brock and Venom.

Unlike the Spider-Man movies, the other films from Peter Parker’s universe did not do so well at the box office. All these characters in the comic book have some connection with Peter. Sony could not efficiently bring the stories of these antagonists of Spider-Man’s stories on screen. Nevertheless, which of these movies earned big commercials? See their ranking here.

4. Madame Web (2024)

  • IMDb Rating: 3.8/10
  • Cast: Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Emma Roberts, and more.
  • Director: S.J. Clarkson
  • Domestic: $14 million (estimated)
  • Worldwide: Yet to be reported

The film was only released in the theatres on February 16, and it is hard to make out its earnings now. As a result, we will keep it at the last position on this list. It is the story of Cassandra Webb, who has the power of clairvoyance and is burdened with protecting three young girls with powers.

How is Madame Web connected to Spider-Man?

The character was first introduced in 1980 in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 210. Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr. created it. She is not one of the main characters in the Spider-Man comic series, but rather a supporting role who appears as an older woman with myasthenia gravis and connected to a life support system resembling a spiderweb. Per, Peter Parker meets her and recognizes her as a super-powered being.

3. Morbius (2022)

  • IMDb Rating: 5.2/10
  • Cast: Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona and others
  • Director: Daniel Espinosa
  • Domestic: $73.86 million
  • Worldwide: $167.46 million

The official synopsis of Morbius reads, “Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others from the same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While it seems to be a radical success at first, a darkness inside him is soon unleashed.”

How is Morbius connected to Spider-Man?

Morbius, the Living Vampire, was created by Roy Thomas, and he made his debut in Marvel Comics in 1971 with The Amazing Spider-Man issue #101. He was introduced as a tragic, sympathetic adversary who often clashed with Peter Parker’s superhero for years. In the 2022 movie, we saw Adrian Toomes, aka the Vulture, in the post-credit scene. Toomes, played by Michael Keaton, appeared in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

2. Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)

  • IMDb Rating: 5.9/10
  • Cast: Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomi Harris, Reid Scott and others
  • Director: Andy Serkis
  • Domestic: $213.55 million
  • Worldwide Collection: $506.86 million

According to the movie’s official synopsis, “Eddie Brock is still struggling to coexist with the shape-shifting extraterrestrial Venom. When deranged serial killer Cletus Kasady also becomes host to an alien symbiote, Brock and Venom must put aside their differences to stop his reign of terror.”

How is Venom connected to Spider-Man?

The alien symbiote is one of Peter Parker’s most famous foes, who is an anti-hero and has morals. It was introduced as a living alien costume in The Amazing Spider-Man #252 in 1984. The character appeared fully in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 in 1988. For the unversed, the Venom Symbiote’s first host was Spider-Man himself. He then merged with other hosts, including Eddie Brock, who is said to be its second-best host. Venom is one of Spider-Man’s archenemies and has developed into an antiheroic figure. Later on, he even helps Spidey fight evil.

1. Venom (2018)

  • IMDb Rating: 6.6/10
  • Cast: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott and more.
  • Director: Ruben Fleischer

  • Worldwide: $856.08 million

Tom Hardy’s character is a failed reporter struggling with personal and professional life and is bonded to an alien entity, one of many symbiotes who have invaded Earth. But the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it.

Tom will once again reprise his role as Eddie Brock in Venom 3, and it is expected to hit the theatres in November this year. The fans will also see Kraven the Hunter on the big screen in August, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead role. Kraven is also one of the enemies of Spider-Man in the Marvel comics.
