The film featured Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and others in key roles. It was high on a pre-release buzz, which got clearly reflected in advance bookings. The film cashed in really well on the Diwali festive season.

With Happy New Year, Shah Rukh Khan once again proved that Diwali is his season and the record-breaking numbers on an opening day was a legit proof. The heist comedy took an earth-shattering start of 44.97 crores and even though the word-of-mouth wasn’t favourable, the film raked in gold at the ticket windows due to festivities. Within the first 3 days, HNY earned 108.86 crores but showed regular dips over the weekdays.

Happy New Year collected 157.57 crores in its opening week and ended its lifetime journey at 205 crores, which was way below the expectations considering such a gigantic start. Nevertheless, it was a Plus affair at the box office.
