There is only a week’s window left for Ranbir Kapoor starrer Besharam to hit screens. Given that the actor by virtue of his recent films, had piled on to the list of powerful stars of the industry, there are obviously high expectations pining on the film. Ranbir’s last screen outing with Deepika Padukone still lingers its delicate flavor. Being one of the year’s most celebrated earners at both the domestic box office and overseas circuits, Besharam has a tough barrier to break if Ranbir intends to topple his own box office records.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani gained a lot of public attention because of the ex-es factor, the same which had worked for Salman Khan starrer Ek Tha Tiger. The Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone’s irresistible chemistry was quite a crowd puller! However, Besharam despite no such highlight point might work for the combined presence of the Kapoor brethren.
The opening day collections Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was a swell, the highest recorded this year before Chennai Express smashed the records created by the film. On its opening day, the film made 19.45 crores at the domestic box office – a daunting record Besharam is looking to supersede. This is Ranbir’s first film to have a worldwide release mid-week. Confirming the news, director Abhinav Kashyap said that as most people have a holiday on October 2 (which is Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday), they decided to release the film on that day, so as to ensure maximum audience.
It can also be expected that the film makes it way into the top 5 films which have recorded the highest opening day collections at the box office. Though Chennai Express reigns the highest opening day income ever of 33.10 crores, the film being a national holiday release can be expected to earn in a higher bracket given that the last watchable release at the box office Grand Masti would have lost its steam by then. Though it is Ranbir’s YJHD which ranks as the 2nd highest opening day collections of 2013, followed by Race 2 and Grand Masti, but there is solid chance Besharam might find a space for itself amongst the year’s most enthralling beginnings at the box office.
Abhinav Kashyap’s last film Dabangg being high on star value with Salman Khan portraying the iconic role of Chulbul Pandey made a heavy 1st day run of 14.50 crores – another heavy challenge Besharam is looking to surpass in terms of box office numbers.
There are many factors which can possibly work in favor of Besharam – Ranbir’s star value, Abhinav Kashyap’s direction, an all-in-all masala entertainer with a judicious fun value to it. The favorable box office air of no releases plus a public holiday all works in its favor. However, as director Abhinav Kashyap claims, content is the boss of commercial cinema; the overall value of Besharam will depend on the great execution of its interesting story. However, it is only for time to prove whether the film can live up to the box office expectations one is hoping from it!
