The HBO series Game of Thrones ended in 2019, but the fans are still mad about its controversial ending, and now the show’s creators, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, have reflected on the backlash years later. It is one of the most popular shows with millions of fans. British actors Kit Harrington, Emilia Clarke, and Peter Dinklage led the fantasy drama.
The show premiered in 2011 and soon became a cult favorite as fans eagerly waited for every season. It ran for eight seasons, and after amazing character development over the years, fans were p*ssed at what D&D did with Emilia‘s Daenerys Targaryen. In the final episode, her love, Jon Snow, kills Danny. As per reports, petitions from the fans asked for the final season to be remade. The situation was so bad that if one searched for bad writers on Google, David, and Dan’s names appeared at the top.
Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and their show 3 Body Problem premiered a few days ago on Netflix. David recalled their reactions to the backlash and said, “I think we knew it would be controversial; we hoped that it would be a little more 50/50 [even]. You hope for a better proportion of— we definitely didn’t want it to be quite so much hate— we were prepared for some of it, but…”
Game of Thrones co-creator Dan Weiss, weighing in his thoughts on the hate they received, said, “I guess I hadn’t taken into account the net worth effects that can help the show when they’re working in your favor as a positive feedback loop.”
He continued, “It’s hypocritical to love it when it’s blowing in your direction and to decide it’s the end of the world when it’s going the other way, but I think that, yeah, that was the part of it that we hadn’t really accounted for in knowing that some people were going to like it and some people weren’t.” David Benioff recalled that amid all the hatred, he received a positive compliment from a Homeland Security personnel member who loved the final season.
