What happens when two mothers who are at different stages in life collide? This is what Ashutosh Nikhil Parandhkar’s feature film explores. Mothers often have a one-dimensional role in movies. However, their role in the lives of their children and loved ones is immense. But their own emotions, feelings, and thoughts hardly ever get the space they deserve.

In the latest Marathi film, we see how two mothers at different stages of life navigate their emotions and support each other. One is about mom guilt, and the other is about mom grief. Both are intense emotions that vary in intensity over time. The film beautifully explores this while not making it tiresome.

Adkitta Movie Review: Script Analysis

The film centers around a married couple, Vihang and Kasturi (Siddharth Chandekar and Sakhi Gokhale), who are new parents to a baby boy. They live in an urban city in Maharashtra and are a nuclear family. They hire a nanny named Mangal (Sai Tamhankar) to look after their child while they continue focusing on their careers and new family dynamics.

Mangal soon becomes an integral part of Vihang and Kasturi’s small family. However, Mangal’s personal life and emotional baggage soon begin to affect Vihang and Kasturi as well. How does their equation evolve after Mangal goes through a distressing emotional trauma? More than a story, it tells the story of three people and their evolving human equations that came into being because of a baby.

Adkitta Movie Review: Star Performance

The film primarily has three protagonists, played by Siddharth Chandekar, Sakhi Gokhale, and Sai Tamhankar. With the narrative focused on them and no major alternate plot or distractions, all three actors get to shine in their performances. Sai Tamhankar plays Mangal, a kind-hearted woman who is in desperate need of money. She, however, never loses her empathetic side despite undergoing a tragic loss. She retains her innocence throughout the movie without stepping into melodramatic mode.

Siddharth Chandekar has always been a delightful presence on screen. He plays quite the feminist man in the film, trying to strike a balance in the family after welcoming a baby with his wife. Even as Sai Tamhankar and Sakhi Gokhale’s characters go into emotional overdrive as two very distinct mothers, it is lovely to see Siddharth portray a man who is understanding yet calm amid the chaos.

Adkitta Movie Review: Direction, Music

The film has been directed by Ashutosh Nikhil Parandhkar, who makes his feature-film directorial debut with this film. It does not have grand twists and turns, yet it keeps you engaged. The film relies on human emotions and the unpredictable and predictable nature of human beings. Usually, with the kind of tragedy the film deals with, what follows is a somber mood. But Parandhkar very smartly deviates from it to a slice-of-life comedy before it gets intense again. This balance is what prevents the film from getting into the tragic and melodramatic arena.

Adkitta also has great music that captures the protagonists’ moods and captures passing time in the film. The songs are very soulful and soothing between films. They may not be chartbuster material, but they are in sync with the film and its tone.

Adkitta Movie Review: The Last Word

Honestly, Adkitta may not be everyone’s cup of tea. It is a good film with honest intentions to reflect on human emotions, especially mom guilt and mom grief, and how they unfold when they are put together in a situation. A mother’s emotions are generally very strong, and it is especially intense whether it is a new mother or a mother who has just suffered the loss of a child. It is an emotion that only a mother can understand.

And Marathi cinema is delivering some of the finest concept-oriented films with finesse and sensitivity. Adkitta is one such film that is all heart while also being realistic. The characters feel quite real and react to situations in ways many of us can relate to. This is a film where you take the journey with the characters and feel empathetic towards the protagonists.
