Angel Studio has characterized itself as being a very conservative studio, one that leads by example in making Christian-influenced films, which is why Runner feels like something that they would not make, as it fits very much the standard action film template to the teeth, which includes quite a lot of violence, but the result is a perfectly watchable action film, with a bit of comedy, emotion, and tons of explosions.
Runner Movie Review: Script Analysis
In a way, Runner has a timeless quality, one that once was the formula used for all action movies in cinemas, and now, a formula that is mainly used in low-budget, direct-to-streaming productions, which is not to say they are bad, but they certainly don’t match the production values of something like Dune, nor match the effort made by international productions like The Furius.
These films stay very much in a lane, and they don’t move from that, with Runner fitting exactly in the range of quality of something like the yearly Jason Statham film, and this covers both production technical values and the writing itself, which puts out two main characters, Hank and Ben, into an odd pair buddy film dynamic and presents a villain that might have too much emotional baggage to feel like a real threat.
The movie also makes use of tropes a bit too much, meaning that some elements will follow their conventional path until the end, taking away any sort of surprising developments from the story. You know what is going to happen, and when it gets pretty much all the way, it doesn’t take away the enjoyment, but part of watching a movie like this is to get one or two surprises on the way, but that is not the case.
Some jokes land while others completely crash, but that is the nature of comedy, but there is also quite a few monologues, with some character basically stopping the plot to deliver backstory, and this clashes with the sense of urgency the movie tries to convey, and it can become annoying because the movie itself knows that the clock is ticking, and some characters seem to not really care about it.
Runner Movie Review: Star Performance
Owen Wilson and Alan Ritchson are known commodities at this point, and they work exactly in the way you know they are going to work. With Owen Wilson being the funny, clunky guy that is way out of his depth but has a heart of gold, so that balances things out, especially when he has to go into action mode, some of those sequences work really well.
Meanwhile, Ritchson, who has become quite famous thanks to his solid run as Reacher, basically pulls off that same character here, a competent action hero that struggles with becoming vulnerable, and it is only after partnering with Wilson’s characters that things start to improve in that regard, and because both actors have good chemistry with each other, the familiar dynamic ends up working well.

Runner Movie Review: Direction, Music
Scott Waugh is a solid action director, nothing fancy, but he knows how to put a movie together, but there is a lack of technical proficiency that could have taken this movie to the next level, but that level of proficiency is not here; thus, the film doesn’t really feel like something worth watching in cinemas but mainly something to watch at home, on a rainy day, a movie to pass the time, and a good time while dining.
Waugh’s lack of surprises extends to the music, visual effects, and more; it is all there, but at the same time, nothing really stands out, which is a shame, because action films have a really tough time standing out because a number of teams from all over the world are always bringing a next level of technical and filmmaking proficiency, and so, those teams that don’t really stand up to the challenge feel like they are not worthy. It is sad, but true.
Runner Movie Review: The Last Word
Runner is a perfectly serviceable movie; it has cool sequences and good chemistry between the leads, but it is also quite predictable, as it adheres a bit too closely to the action-film template we all know and have experienced for so many years. As a stand-in, I think it will find success on the streaming services, but as a theatrical experience, it doesn’t live up to the potential of the format, which at this point is all about movies that feel like an event, and this is not one of those.
